Highlands and Islands Enterprise awards £1.8m funding boost for the Natural Retreats and Heritage GB John o'Groats transformation
The ambitious plans to completely transform and revitalize one of Scotland's best-known destinations from two leading tourism partners, Natural Retreats and Heritage GB, have been reinforced with a £1.8 million funding boost from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE); further recognition of the importance of this significant project.
The first phase of development will include the creation of 19 luxurious apartments and 23 stand alone holiday residences, using environmentally-sustainable construction and cutting-edge design. Following the huge success of other sites around the UK, Natural Retreats now aims to encourage guests throughout the UK to rediscover the culture, wildlife and scenic beauty of this unique region. Phase 1 of the development will be underpinned by strong sustainable principles including the use of locally sourced materials such as Caithness stone, Scottish Larch timber and turf roofs.
HIE has demonstrated that their involvement is in line with Natural Retreats' commitment to the local community and surrounding area. "Our vision for John o'Groats is to deliver a vibrant social and business community, designed to reflect the natural beauty of the location, and release the economic potential for the whole area," commented, head of transformational projects at HIE, Carol Dunn.

Construction of this exciting project is due to begin in summer 2011
